“But I am among you as one who serves.

You are those who have stood by me in my trials”

                                                                                                 Luke 22: 27&28

These words of Jesus may seem unconnected. Yet as I reflect upon our visit to Hands@Work, in South Africa in August, they seem to sum up much of what the visit was all about.

The Journey

“But now, God’s Message, the God who made you in the first place, Jacob, the One who got you started, Israel: “Don’t be afraid, I’ve redeemed you. I’ve called your name. You’re mine. When you’re in over your head, I’ll be there with you. When you’re in rough waters, you will not go down. When you’re between a rock and a hard place, it won’t be a dead end - because I am God, your personal God, The Holy of Israel, your Saviour. I paid a huge price for you: all of Egypt, with rich Cush and Seba thrown in! That’s how much you mean to me! That’s how much I love you! I’d sell off the whole world to get you back, trade the creation just for you. “So don’t be afraid: I’m with you. I’ll round up all your scattered children; pull them in from east and west.
I’ll send orders north and south: ‘Send them back. Return my sons from distant lands, my daughters from faraway places. I want them back, every last one who bears my name, every man, woman, and child Whom I created for my glory, yes, personally formed and made each one.’”

Isaiah 43:1-7 The Message

The scallop is the symbol for the Apostle James. St. James used the scallop shell during his pilgrimage to beg for food and water. Even the poorest people could fill the small shell, so he always found help along his way. Later, followers of St. James wore the scallop-shell symbol on their hats and clothes and it became the symbol of pilgrimage or journeying.

You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, to be known and read by all; and you show that you are a letter of Christ, prepared by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts.”

Pentecost Sunday falls this year on Sunday 8 June. Many people, including Christians, may not know why the day is so special or what is celebrated. Unlike Easter and Christmas, when colourful eggs, Easter bunnies, Christmas trees and Santa Claus are heralds of the upcoming Christian holidays, there are no such social markers by secular society ahead of Pentecost.

Pentecost is a great and joyful celebration;

Eastertide ends ten days before Pentecost, when we celebrate Ascension Day. In the Western Church we usually celebrate Jesus’ ascension on a Thursday, which this year falls on 29 May.
